Playing DotA in Widescreen resolutions
If you own a Widescreen monitor you are probably familiar with the black bars to the sides of the view when playing DotA, you can get rid of those black bars and use your entire monitor, the only downside is that the FOV will not change, so the view will be a stretched.
DotA custom resolutions
Custom resolutions in DotA is the solution to the problem with black bars and makes the battle field fill up your entire widescreen monitor, by setting DotA to run in the native resolution of your monitor.
How do I get DotA to run in Widescreen
DotA (or Warcraft 3 if you will) supports widescreen resolutions, but you have to get your hands dirty, here is how you do it:
Guide to setup DotA for Widescreen - works for Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP:
1) Make sure the resolution you want to run is supported by your graphics drivers.
If you can select a resolution in your Operating System, then it is supported. If the resolution doesn't exist, read our guide on how to configure custom resolutions in windows.
2) Backup your registry, in case something goes wrong.
START > Run > regedit > file > export
3) Find Warcraft3's in the Windows register.
START > run > regedit
While in the Windows Registry Editor (regedit), locate:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Blizzard Entertainment > Warcraft III > Video
4) Type in your preferred resolution:
(Right click the entry > Change > select "decimal" > fill in new value)
resheight = 1920
reswidth = 1200
Replace width & height with the resolution of your monitor, here are some examples:
Some common TV screen resolutions
1280x720 16:9 Widescreen
1365x768 16:9 Widescreen
1920x1080 16:9 Widescreen
1680x1050 16:10 Widescreen
1920x1200 16:10 Widescreen
1920x1080 16:9 Widescreen
2560x1600 16:10 Widescreen
Here are some more standard resolutions for 16:10 and 16:9 Widescreen resolutions.

The aspect ratio
Unfortunately there is no way of changing the view's aspect ratio in DotA since Warcraft 3 is locked to 4:3 aspect ratio (not widescreen). The good things about running DotA in a widescreen resolution is that you can utilize your entire monitor and get a little more clarity that comes with the extra pixels, so if you don't mind that the view is a bit stretched, I'd say go for it!
